An Actuary Like Me – Evelyn Yong

Evelyn Yong started her actuarial career in the life insurance industry as a graduate with CommInsure (and then AIA). 7 years later, she decided to pivot into consulting and focus on climate change. She is currently a consultant at Finity’s Perils and Climate Risk practice, helping translate climate change projections into financial impacts for various types of institutions, including asset owners, banks, and insurers. 
Evelyn is a member of the Climate Sustainability Working Group (CSWG) at the Actuaries Institute and the Resource and Environment Virtual Forum (REVF) with the IAA.

What is the most valuable asset an actuary can possess?

The ability to keep learning.

What is your advice for younger/rising actuaries? 

Don’t let your current practice area be the first and only choice you make – diversify your skillset.

What’s something an outsider wouldn’t know about your industry?

We are often not the smartest people in the room, and we rely on cross-collaboration with many professions.

Where do you see the biggest growth opportunities for actuaries?

In climate and sustainability (I am biased, of course!).

What do you do to recharge each day?

Spend time with my two bunnies.

Painting and other crafts, computer games.

Camera/gallery app.

What is your favourite random fact?

The whispering wall – whispers can travel really long distances along arched buildings.

What is on your bucket list?

Skiing! I’ve never ever done it before…

If you had millions of dollars, what would you do every day?

Volunteer work with animals.

If you lived 500 years in the future, what do you think your profession would be?

Planting soybeans.
