Actuarial dining in Adelaide… Actuarial ‘madness’ in Hobart!

Amid the broader easing of COVID-19 restrictions around Australia recently, Actuaries Institute members based in Tasmania and South Australia took the opportunity to reconnect at social gatherings in Hobart and Adelaide.

10 out of 14 Tasmanian members, which includes Institute Vice President Naomi Edwards, braved a stormy Spring evening to gather at Hobart’s Bar Wa Izakaya restaurant on Wednesday 3 November.

On the night, attendees experienced a dose of ‘Actuarial Madness’, and not in the emotive form that actuaries may feel in their day-to-day work. The dose came courtesy of a special cocktail created by award-winning sommelier Alec Gribble, who is the son of Institute Councilor Jules Gribble.

With its suitably blue colour, Actuarial Madness reportedly packs a brilliant punch beneath its conservative exterior, an accurate representation of the profession. And it was said to have been in plentiful supply at the reunion in the Apple Isle.

Among many topics of discussion, the Tasmanian contingent planned on making the trip over Bass Strait to attend the 2022 All-Actuaries Summit, running from 2-4 May at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

On Wednesday 27 August, Councilor Jules Gribble organised a dinner for South Australian members at the Earl of Aberdeen Hotel in Adelaide. Prior to the dinner, the evening commenced with a virtual presentation from Institute President Jefferson Gibbs, who delivered his Presidential Address.

Following this, attendees gathered to enjoy a meal and sample local wine, while discussing the Institute’s HorizonScan 35 initiative. The night was a great success, and also enabled several members new to Adelaide the chance to meet other actuaries.
